Drovers Outslug the Saints in a Wild Midweek Matchup

CHICKASHA, Okla. – Tuesday afternoon, the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma (9-14, 5-7 SAC) clawed their way to a wild 16-15 walk-off win against Randall University (11-14, 5-1 NCCAA).

 

Following a pair of scoreless innings, the Saints rallied for four runs in the top of the third, followed by two more in the fourth. USAO trimmed its deficit to 6-1 in the bottom of the third, but Randall quickly stretched their lead back to six with a run in the top of the fifth,

The Drovers cut the deficit to 7-5 with four runs in the bottom of the fourth but immediately surrendered five more runs in the top of the sixth.

USAO rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut Randall's lead to 12-8. The Saints scored once in the top of the seventh, prior to the Drovers pushing across three runs in the bottom of the seventh and trailed 13-11.

Randall scored its final two runs in the top of the eighth, before USAO tied it at 15-15 with four runs in the bottom of the eighth.

In the bottom of the ninth, Anthony Hampton managed to drive in the winning run on an infield single to put an end to the wild midweek matchup.

 

As a team, the Drovers offense produced 18 hits and reached on seven walks, while the Saints tallied 17 hits and drew 10 walks. The Drovers committed two fielding errors, and the Saints fumbled the ball once defensively.

 

USAO's offense was led by six multi-hit performances, including Anthony Hampton going 4-5 with a walk, a home run, four runs scored, and three runs batted in. Gabe Clyden finished 3-4 with two walks, a double, three runs scored, and a run batted in, while Luke Fox went 3-5 with a run scored.

Conner Martin concluded 2-5 with a home run, two runs scored, and three runs batted in. Henry Garcia doubled twice as he went 2-6 with a run scored and four runs batted in. Derrick Morillo finished 2-5 with a walk, a double, a run scored, and two runs batted in.

Corey Morro and Alfonso Camacho each singled in the win.

 

Layton Bryan made his first collegiate start and pitched two scoreless innings, striking out one batter. Chris Ottinger pitched a scoreless inning, and Jake Finkelstein tossed two scoreless innings to earn the win.

 

WHAT'S NEXT?

The Drovers will now head to Plainview, Texas to face Wayland Baptist University on March (20-21). Friday's double header is scheduled to begin at 3:00 PM CT, followed by a 1:00 PM CT start time for Saturday's series finale.
