Drovers Score a Pair of Unanswered Goals to Take Down the Rams

CHICKASHA, Okla. – Tuesday night, the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma (5-2-3, 1-1 SAC) earned their first win in conference-play with a 2-1 triumph against Texas Wesleyan University (6-5, 0-2 SAC). In head-to-head matchups, the Drovers hold an 11-4-1 advantage in the all-time series, dating to 2011.

 

The Rams managed to jump out to an early advantage, finding the back of the net in the 9th minute of the contest. Texas Wesleyan remained in the lead until USAO struck for the equalizer in the 41st minute, as Thato Lekgetho scored his fourth goal of the season, assisted by Richard Ebongue Bollanga

Just two minutes later, Matija Malenovic gave the Drovers the lead with his ninth goal of the season, assisted by Gustav Rosenqvist. USAO were in full control of the momentum and took a 2-1 advantage into the break. 

 

Following halftime, both teams had chances to score, but the defenses held strong and USAO ultimately clung to victory.

 

As a team, USAO attempted a total of 13 shots, with seven being on goal, while Texas Wesleyan attempted 12 shots, four of which were on frame. The Rams were whistled for only six fouls, while the Drovers committed 14 infractions. Furthermore, the physical contest featured six yellow cards, three for each side. The Drovers attempted seven corner kicks, while holding the Rams to only one kick out of their offensive corners.

 

Angel Diaz got the start between the pipes for USAO and stopped three of the four shots that came his way, to move his record to 20-14-11 as a Drover.

 

With his game-winning goal, Matija Malenovic tallied his ninth goal of the season, which currently leads the Sooner Athletic Conference, as well as ranks 12th nationally. Furthermore, he ranks second in the SAC in points (18). 

His nine goals this season also matches a career-high for the Serbian. In his incredible career at USAO, the versatile captain has recorded 19 goals, 13 assists, and 51 points in 67 games played since 2021.

The Drovers will return to the pitch on Saturday, Oct. 4 make the short trip to Oklahoma City to face rival Mid-America Christian University. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:30 PM CT at Dill Soccer Field.
